    INVESTGATING THE INTENTION OF PURCHASING DIGITAL ITEMS IN VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES

    Most virtual community (VC) providers lack profitable business models. The challenge for VC providers is to generate and increase revenue from sources other than advertising. The sale of digital items (e.g., avatar) to VC members is a recent revenue generation method. This study examines how VC members decide to purchase digital items from the customer value perspective. Based on customer value theory, this study identifies six factors over three dimensions of customer value and examines their effects on VC members’ intention of purchasing digital items. Our finding suggests that the effect of value on members’ purchase intentions is significant in the functional (i.e., quality of digital items), social (i.e., social self-image), and emotional (i.e., playfulness) value dimensions. This study provides important implications for practitioners to understand how they can foster an ideal environment for customers to perceive more value in their digital items so that it would be more compelling to make purchases in a VC

    Important predictor of mortality in patients with end-stage liver disease

    Prognosis is an essential part of the baseline assessment of any disease. For predicting prognosis of end-stage liver disease, many prognostic models were proposed. Child-Pugh score has been the reference for assessing the prognosis of cirrhosis for about three decades in end-stage liver disease. Despite of several limitations, recent large systematic review showed that Child-Pugh score was still robust predictors and it's components (bilirubin, albumin and prothrombin time) were followed by Child-Pugh score. Recently, Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score emerged as a "modern" alternative to Child-Pugh score. The MELD score has been an important role to accurately predict the severity of liver disease and effectively assess the risk of mortality. Due to several weakness of MELD score, new modified MELD scores (MELD-Na, Delta MELD) have been developed and validated.     Real-time bladder volume monitoring by the application of a new implantable bladder volume sensor for a small animal model

    AbstractAlthough real-time monitoring of bladder volume together with intravesical pressure can provide more information for understanding the functional changes of the urinary bladder, it still entails difficulties in the accurate prediction of real-time bladder volume in urodynamic studies with small animal models. We studied a new implantable bladder volume monitoring device with eight rats. During cystometry, microelectrodes prepared by the microelectromechanical systems process were placed symmetrically on both lateral walls of the bladder, and the expanded bladder volume was calculated. Immunohistological study was done after 1 week and after 4 weeks to evaluate the biocompatibility of the microelectrode. From the point that infused saline volume into the bladder was higher than 0.6mL, estimated bladder volume was statistically correlated with the volume of saline injected (p<0.01). Additionally, the microelectromechanical system microelectrodes used in this study showed reliable biocompatibility. Therefore, the device can be used to evaluate changes in bladder volume in studies with small animals, and it may help to provide more information about functional changes in the bladder in laboratory studies. Furthermore, owing to its biocompatibility, the device could be chronically implanted in conscious ambulating animals, thus allowing a novel longitudinal study to be performed for a specific purpose

    Secure capacity analysis for magnetic inductive coupling-based SWIPT system

    Many researchers have provided meaningful insights for physical layer security (PLS) in various wireless communication systems. However, few works have carried out an intensive PLS analysis for magnetic inductive coupling (MIC)-based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). This paper analyzes the effect of the angular position of coils on the secure capacity of a MIC-based SWIPT system in the presence of a potential malicious power receiver. Using a simple coupling model, we analyze the maximum achievable secure capacity of a MIC-based SWIPT system when the transmitter has knowledge of the coil angular positions of the receiver and the potential eavesdropper. In addition, we expand our analysis to the case where the transmitter has only limited knowledge of the coil angular positions of the receiver and the potential eavesdropper due to the angular fluctuation of the coils. Since employing the PLS technique with a traditional security algorithm can enhance security, the analysis will provide a meaningful contribution for improving MIC-based SWIPT system security. © 2013 IEEE.1

    AKARI Detection of the Infrared-Bright Supernova Remnant B0104-72.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud

    We present a serendipitous detection of the infrared-bright supernova remnant (SNR) B0104-72.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud by the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. An elongated, partially complete shell is detected in all four observed IRC bands covering 2.6-15 um. The infrared shell surrounds radio, optical, and X-ray emission associated with the SNR and is probably a radiative SNR shell. This is the first detection of a SNR shell in this near/mid-infrared waveband in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The IRC color indicates that the infrared emission might be from shocked H2 molecules with some possible contributions from ionic lines. We conclude that B0104-72.3 is a middle-aged SNR interacting with molecular clouds, similar to the Galactic SNR IC 443. Our results highlight the potential of AKARI IRC observations in studying SNRs, especially for diagnosing SNR shocks.Comment: 12 pages with 3 figures, accepted for publication in AKARI PASJ special issu

    Age-related changes of ocular parameters in Korean subjects

    Aims: To evaluate the age-related variations of ocular parameters in Korean subjects. Methods: We recruited 314 normal subjects who visited the department of Ophthalmology between January 2007 and October 2007. Refraction, axial length, corneal curvature, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber depth, corneal endothelial cell density, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were measured using auto-refractive keratometer, intraocular lens master, noncontact specular microscope, and optical coherence tomography. Result: In correlation analysis, from 19 to 82 years, hyperopic shift showed a strong positive statistical correlation with age (r = 0.553, P < 0.001). Corneal curvatures increased (r = 0.221, P < 0.001), while axial length (r = -0.506, P < 0.001), anterior chamber depth (r = -0.491, P < 0.001) and white-to-white distance (r = -0.205, P < 0.001) decreased with age. Also, corneal endothelial cell density was lower in older patients than in younger patients (r = -0.409, P < 0.001). Compared to younger patients, RNFL thickness was lower in the older patients as well, in all quadrants (superior, r = -0.283, P < 0.001; inferior, r = -0.230, P < 0.001; nasal, r = 0.025, P = 0.676; and temporal, r = -0.393, P < 0.001). According to multiple regression analysis, out of the six parameters measured, only hyperopic shift, anterior chamber depth and corneal endothelial cell density (P, 0.05) had statistically significant correlation with age. Conclusion: Some of the ocular parameters changed with aging. Hyperopic shift, shallowing anterior chamber depth, and reduction of corneal endothelial cell density were only definitely related to age

    Globalization of Korean IT Companies: Opportunities and Strategies

    The main focus of this paper is to analyze the current IT industry and to provide relevant strategies for Korean IT companies (such as Samsung SDS and LG CNS et al.,) which want to go global. This paper first addresses an overview of the IT Industry. This research examines the major players in the IT industry, the critical success factors (CSFs), as well as the opportunities that exist in the industry. This study also analyzes Indian IT sector, finding out some important factors that have had an impact on their success in going global; then, overview of the Korean IT sector and assessment of Korea IT companies - particularly Samsung SDS and LG CNS - are provided and discussed. Finally, the study suggests a couple of relevant strategies to Korea IT companies for exploiting the opportunities for globalizing their market. Some practical implications of the study findings as well as future directions for the companies are also discussed
